Melvin Gordon selected as the NFLPA’s Week 1 Community MVP
Posted By:  Austin Alley
Thursday, September 13, 2018

In recognition of his participation in the Los Angeles Meal Pack for 9/11 Day, the NFL Players Association named Chargers Running Back Melvin Gordon as their Week 1 Community MVP. The award acknowledges how Gordon has embraced community involvement as a member of the Chargers, specifically through his personal mission of hunger relief.

In commemoration of Americans’ sacrifices on September 11, 2018, Gordon spent the afternoon at the Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center where he and one thousand other volunteers packed 250,000 nonperishable meals. These meals were distributed to the homeless, the elderly, veterans, and food insecure youth throughout Greater Los Angeles. Though not an official program of the Beyond the Flash Foundation, the Meal Pack for 9/11 was a direct continuation of the mission of Gordon’s personal charity, which is to provide support for inner-city and low-income children throughout Los Angeles who struggle with hunger.

The NFLPA’s Community MVP program highlights the many difference-making activities that NFL players are participating in throughout teams’ communities. Each week during the season, a single player is selected as that week’s Community MVP, recognizing his effort to go above and beyond for those in need. Gordon is the second Community MVP of the 2018 NFL season.

As part of the award, Melvin Gordon’s Beyond the Flash Foundation will receive a $10,000 check courtesy of the NFLPA and a limited-time bobblehead of Gordon will be made available through Forever Collectibles. These bobbleheads can be purchased at http://www.sportsfanisland.com/.

Additionally, Gordon is now eligible for the prestigious Alan Page Community Award at season’s end. Only Community MVP winners throughout the season are eligible for this award, which recognizes the single player who has given back to his community the most throughout the season.
